The Ninth Commission Meeting of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II attended The 9th Commission of the CPTPP meeting held in Melbourne, Australia. The meeting was chaired by Senator the Hon Don Farrell, Minister for Trade and Tourism, Special Minister of State and attended by CPTPP Ministers, Head of Delegations and Representatives from Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United Kingdom and Viet Nam.

During the meeting, Brunei Darussalam together with fellow CPTPP Parties warmly welcomed the inaugural Trade and Investment Dialogues between the CPTPP and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as well as between the CPTPP Parties and the European Union (EU). The Dialogues were held on the margins of the CPTPP Commission, which underscored the shared commitment to promote fair and open trade, supporting sustainable growth and fostering a predictable trading environment. 

The CPTPP Commission also welcomed the good progress made in the ongoing discussion on Costa Rica’s accession process to the Agreement. Further, four aspirants have been identified in line with the Auckland Principles, namely Indonesia, the Philippines, the United Arab Emirates and Uruguay. The CPTPP have decided to commence an accession process with Uruguay, and will commence with the others in 2026, if appropriate. 

The CPTPP Commission underscored its commitment to ensure that the Agreement remains high standard and fit-for-purpose. In this regard, the Commission endorsed the outcome of the General Review including updates on several Chapters through negotiations from early 2026, in areas of Electronic Commerce, Trade in Services, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Competitiveness and Business Facilitation and Trade and Women’s Economic Empowerment. In addition, initiatives will be developed to further strengthen the Agreement, among others, on Investment, Economic Coercion and Market Distorting Practices. 

Also in attendance were Yang Mulia Dr. Hajah May Fa’ezah binti Haji Ahmad Ariffin, Permanent Secretary (Economy, Trade and Industry) and officers from Trade Division at the Ministry of Finance and Economy. 6. The CPTPP Commission also endorsed the Joint Ministerial Statement on the occasion of the Ninth Commission Meeting of the CPTPP which can be accessed at Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australia.
