Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through Weights and Measures Unit (SDT)
and Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS) through Department of Consumer
Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and Economy conducted Joint Operation on three (3)
business premises at Kampong Kapok, Brunei Muara District on Saturday, 11 October 2025.
During the operation, SDT officers found twelve (12) units of weights and measures unit used
for trading purposes were in compliance with the Weights and Measures Act 1983 Chapter 151
and Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994. Business owners are advised to
display the net weight of packaged goods clearly which enables customers to choose and
manage their expenses wisely.
Meanwhile the DEPS found that all inspected premises followed the Price Control Act, Chapter
142 and its regulations, with price-controlled items such as cooking oil and formulated
powdered milk being sold within the set maximum prices. The prices of items displayed at the
business premises were also found to be clearly and accurately displayed.
Business owners are advised to ensure every weighing and measuring machines used during
trading activities must be registered with SDT and in accordance with the Weights and
Measures Act 1983 Chapter 151 and Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994.
Failure to comply with or contravene with any provision of the Act is an offense and is liable
on conviction to a fine of BND1000.00 or imprisonment for a period of three (3) months or
both.
Businesses are also reminded to uphold ethical practices by ensuring that price-controlled items
are not sold above their set maximum prices and that all prices are clearly and accurately
displayed so as not to mislead consumers. The latest maximum prices for price-controlled items
can be accessed through the DEPS website at www.deps.mofe.gov.bn.
