Empowering Young Consumers: Commerce Educators Engaged to Champion Smart Consumer Culture

02 August 2025

A meaningful step toward nurturing smart and informed young consumers began with a knowledge-sharing session for Subject-Based Committee (SBC) - Commerce educators from schools across all districts, aimed to reinforce the importance of consumer rights education, starting as early as the classroom.

The session facilitated by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) started by providing an overview of the Department’s roles and responsibilities, and the key objectives of the session. The four key objectives of the session were understanding consumer rights, becoming a smart consumer, utilizing the PenggunaBijak app as a digital information tool, and exploring resource materials for educators.

The presentation then introduced the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, Chapter 261, which addresses unfair business practices, including misleading consumers, making false claims, and taking advantage of consumers. It also outlined the roles of different sector regulators in Brunei Darussalam.

Participants engaged in a polling session to gauge their responses when encountering unfair business practices. The session continued with guidance on becoming a smart consumer, emphasizing three consumer rights which are the right to information, the right to choose, and the right to redress.

The PenggunaBijak app was showcased as a practical tool for being a smart consumer. Features like 1-2-Compare, weekly price monitoring, and lodging complaints were highlighted, along with other resources available on the Department’s website and from regional sources.

The sharing session held at Sekolah Menengah Rimba II concluded with an interactive quiz, and a Q&A segment where participants inquired about real-life scenarios involving unfair business practices and the appropriate actions that can be taken by the Department.
