Promoting Ethical Business Practices and Transparent Sales and Promotion during Brunei Salebration (BSB) 2025

29 January 2025

The recent joint operation conducted by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS) emphasized the critical importance of ethical sales and promotional practices. BSb 2025 participants were reminded to conduct genuine sales with clearly defined and transparent terms and conditions, ensuring consumers are not misled or confused when making purchase decisions. This approach reinforces the commitment to fostering trust between businesses and consumers.

The operation served not only to ensure compliance with the Cheap Sale Price Event Regulations but also to enforce related provisions under the Price Control Act, Chapter 142, and the Weights and Measures Act 1983 (Chapter 151). These regulations play a vital role in safeguarding consumer interests and maintaining fair trade practices.

During the operation, one business premise was found selling formulated powdered infant milk above the maximum price, while two others failed to clearly display price labels. Consequently, compounds of $500 each were issued to Milimewah Department Store Sdn Bhd and Haji Mohammad Bakir Jaya Sdn Bhd for violations, while one Warning Notice was issued.

Meanwhile, the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) has found seventeen (17) units of measuring and weighing instruments during the operation. One (1) unit of the instrument failed to comply with the Weights and Measures Act 1983 (Chapter 151), using an expired permitted registration period. The SDT has issued a Seizure Notice, and the weighing instrument has been confiscated. The business is required to report to the Weights and Measures Unit Office within seven (7) working days from the date of the issued notice.

DEPS and SDT continue to emphasize the importance of ethical and transparent sales strategies. Businesses are urged to prioritize clarity and honesty in their promotional activities to enhance consumer confidence and satisfaction while supporting a fair marketplace for all. Additionally, businesses should ensure their weight and measure tools and equipment used for trading purposes are registered with SDT and still valid for use, not expired.

The joint operation is a monthly enforcement activity between DEPS through the Department of Consumer Affairs and SDT under the Industry and Business Ecosystem Division in the Ministry of Finance and Economy. The monthly joint operation for January 2025 covered business premises in Seria, Belait District.
