The Final Report of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2023, based on the final data from the 
survey has been released by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS), 
Ministry of Finance and Economy. The report provides a more detailed information on the 
labour force in Brunei Darussalam such as employment status, types of economic activity 
and occupation, employment sector, working hours and income from employment.
The Final Report of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2023 shows an increase in the employed 
population aged 18 years and over by 2.9 per cent, rising from 209.9 thousand in 2022 to 
216.0 thousand in 2023. This increase includes a 3.2 per cent rise in the public sector 
workers and a 2.9 per cent in the private sector workers. 
More than half (57.0 per cent) of local workers are employed in the private sector, with 
43.o per cent working in the public sector. The majority of local workers are employed in 
public administration (28.0 per cent), followed by wholesale and retail trade (13.8 per 
cent) and education (12.2 per cent). By occupation type, service and sales workers 
accounted for 23.5 per cent, professionals for 21.1 per cent and clerical support workers
for 14.7 per cent.
 
The average hours usually worked in main job decreased to 45.8 hours in a week compared 
to 46.2 hours in the previous year, due to a reduction in the average hours usually worked 
in the private sector, especially among local workers.
