Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) under Ministry of Finance and Economy has conducted spot check visits to the festive stalls in conjunction with His Majesty’s Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam 78th birthday celebration. The Enforcement Operation was carried out at the parking area in front of Royal Regalia Building and Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien on Wednesday, 17th July 2024.

The operation was a routine enforcement initiative to ensure weights and measures machines used for business activity are registered and verified in accordance to the Weights and Measures Act 1983 Chapter 151. 

During the inspection, SDT officers found eleven (11) units of weighing and measuring machines used for trading purposes. Whereby, five (5) units were in violation of the Weights and Measures Act 1983, Chapter 151 and its stipulated guidelines, i.e. four (4) units using unverified weights and measures machines and one (1) unit has an expired validity date. The owners of the equipment have been issued with a Reminder Notice and was required to rectify the issue and present themselves to SDT Unit’s Office within three (3) working days from the date the notice was issued. 

As stipulated in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under section 3 (2); Every person who uses or has in his possession for use for trade any weight, measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by this regulation shall be guilty of an offence. The penalty for such offence is a fine of BND1,000.00 or imprisonment for three (3) months or both and instrument for weighing shall be liable to be forfeited and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure or instrument for Weighing shall be void.
