​REPORT OF THE LABOUR FORCE SURVEY (LFS) 2023

The number of employed persons aged 18 years and over in the Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2023 was 216,000 persons and the majority were locals with 152,600 persons (70.6 per cent).

The labour force participation rate (LFPR) in 2023 was 67.2 per cent, with the rate for males (75.8 per cent) being higher than females (57.3 per cent) by 18.5 per cent.

The unemployment rate for persons aged 18 years and over was 5.1 per cent, of which the highest unemployment rate was those aged 18 to 24 years old. 

Out of the population aged 18 years and over, 32.8 per cent were persons outside the labour force who were not actively looking for a job and are not ready to work because they had family/household responsibilities, pensioner and etc. By age group, 39.6 per cent out of the total persons in the outside labour force were aged 60 years and over. 

The report of the LFS 2023 has been released by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS), Ministry of Finance and Economy with the main objective to collect the latest information on the size, structure, distribution and characteristics of the labour force, employment and unemployment, which will be used to assist in the planning, research, policy-making and management concerning the labour force.

The survey covered about 3,200 selected households throughout the country using a systematic sampling method. Data obtained from the selected households were extrapolated according to the sampling weights and then calibrated to represent the total population living in regular households in Brunei Darussalam.
