In August 2023, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a year-on-year decrease of 0.1 per cent compared to August 2022. The decline was driven by a 0.6 per cent decrease in Non-Food prices. Meanwhile, Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages prices recorded an increase of 1.7 per cent.

The year-on-year decrease in Non-Food prices was due to a fall in the prices of Transport price (3.5 per cent) mainly driven by the decrease in motor cars prices; Communication (3.1 per cent), particularly telephone and telefax services; and Clothing and Footwear (1.3 per cent) in line with the fall in the prices of clothing material. 

However, the year-on-year decrease was moderated by an increase in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages mainly due to the rise in the prices of low sugar drinks; and wheat products. 

For month-on-month changes, the CPI showed an increase of 0.4 per cent, attributed to an increase in both Non-Food; and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages prices by 0.4 per cent and 0.2 per cent, respectively. 

The month-on-month increase in Non-Food prices was contributed by the prices of Clothing and Footwear (5.9 per cent); Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance (0.9 per cent); and Recreation and Culture (0.3 per cent). Meanwhile, the increase in Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages prices was mainly contributed by the rise in the prices of Non-Alcoholic Beverages (2.7 per cent); Fruits (0.3 per cent); and Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate and Confectionery (0.2 per cent). 

The CPI is a measure of price changes of goods and services paid by the consumer in a specified period and compiled on a monthly basis. The list of goods and services in the CPI is based on the average expenditure per household from the Household Expenditure Survey (HES).
