Encouraging response from businesses in Jualan Aneka Brunei sales event

467 retailers have registered to participate in the Jualan Aneka Brunei 2019, which is aimed to stimulate business activities in the domestic retail sector and to encourage residents and tourists to shop in Brunei Darussalam during the festive Ramadhan and Hari Raya season.

The annual nationwide sales event organized by the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE), Ministry of Finance and Economy has recorded a more than 20% increase in business participation this year with retailers ranging from department stores, supermarkets, boutiques, textile and footwear, house furnishing, health and beauty salons, car accessories and sports stores. The Jualan Aneka Brunei 2019 is scheduled for 56 days beginning 29 April to 23 June 2019.

The increase in business participation is a positive response following the removal of sales regulation on minimum percentage of discount on goods to be offered on sale in stores. This measure is part of the ease of doing business initiative to allow businesses flexibility on deciding percentage of discount and proportion of goods to be offered on discount. It also incentivizes businesses to undertake more creative and innovative measures to adjust their sales and discount strategies to be more competitive in attracting consumers, to promote a more competitive business environment in Brunei Darussalam.

Meanwhile, JPKE would like to advise businesses to play their part in upholding a healthy business environment through ethical business practices towards building business credibility and to win consumers’ trust to shop in Brunei Darussalam.

JPKE further advises that unfair business practices, which can potentially mislead consumers such as hidden charges, not displaying price tags, using small prints to conceal terms and conditions in giving discounts, making false claims and taking advantage of consumers who are not able to understand the transactions, are prohibited under the Consumer Protection Fair Trade Order (CPFTO) and the Price Display Regulations.

JPKE encourages the public to make the best of the discounts and promotions on offer during Jualan Aneka Brunei 2019 for their Ramadhan and Hari Raya shopping. The list of sales participants is accessible on the PenggunaBijak mobile app and JPKE’s website. Participating stores can also be identified by the sales notices issued by JPKE displayed on their premises.

Consumers are reminded to exercise their right to choose by comparing prices and quality in making value for money purchase decisions. Consumers are responsible to observe sales terms and conditions, guarantees and keeping their purchase receipts, in case of any required follow-up after the purchase.
