​Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), Industry and Business Ecosystem Division under
Ministry of Finance and Economy conducted spot check visits to market booths (Pasar
Tani Kampong Selayun and Pasar Ikan Gadong). The Enforcement Operation was carried
out on Thursday, 21st July 2022.
The operation was part of the ongoing initiative to protect consumers and to further
encourage local businesses to be transparent in conducting their business activities.
During the operation, SDT also conducted checks on the weighing machines that are used
for business purposes and to ensure that it is in accordance with the Weights and
Measures Act, 1983 Chapter 151 and the stipulated guidelines under the Act.
During the inspection visits, SDT found nineteen (19) units weighing machines that
failed to comply with the Weights and Measures Act, 1983 Chapter 151. The owners of
the equipment have been issued with a notice and are required to register the said
equipment used for trade within THREE (3) working days at the nearest Weights and
Measures Unit office.
Consumers are also advised to ensure any weighing and measuring machines used
during trading activities involving weight, volume and length of the devices have a valid
registration sticker issued by the Weights and Measures Unit.
As stipulated in the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations, 1994 under
section 3(2); Every person who uses or has in his possession for use for trade any weight,
measure or instrument for weighing not stamped as required by this regulation shall be
guilty of an offence. The penalty for such offence is a fine of BND1,000.00 or
imprisonment for three (3) months or both and instrument for weighing shall be liable
to be forfeited and any contract, bargain, sale or dealing made by such weight, measure
or instrument for Weighing shall be void.
