Implementation of The First Stage Population and Housing Census (BPP) 2021

​The Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS), Ministry of Finance and Economy is currently conducting the First Stage of Population and Housing Census (BPP) 2021 for Brunei Darussalam which is the Houselisting Stage began on 20 January 2021 and is scheduled to end on 21 February 2021.

During the first stage, all housing units throughout the country will be listed to ensure full coverage of the census. Census Officers will visit each housing unit to collect information such as names, identity card numbers, date of birth and telephone number of head of household and each household member living in the house. Census Officers will also affix a sticker to each housing unit.

BPP 2021 covers all persons, whether Brunei Darussalam citizens, permanent residents or temporary residents according to their usual place of residence, who have stayed or intends to stay as usual members of the household for a period of 6 months or more in 2021.

In general, the response rate from members of the public to date is very satisfactory. JPES greatly appreciates the cooperation given by each household / family as well as other relevant parties for the success of BPP 2021 field works. As such, if there are households and families that have not been visited by the Census Officers, please contact JPES as soon as possible.

The head or members of households are advised to ensure that the Census Officers that visit their houses are legitimately appointed by JPES by checking their census passes, appointment letters and identity cards.

Households with pets such as dogs are also kindly requested to give their cooperation by ensuring their dogs are put on leash or caged during the Census Officers’ visit.

BPP 2021 is conducted under the Census Act, Chapter 78 from the Laws of Brunei Darussalam. The Census Act makes it obligatory for the public to answer all the questions and guarantees the confidentiality of information furnished. Failure to cooperate or provide the required information by the census is an offence. If found guilty, penalty of a fine of BND2,500.00 and six (6) months imprisonment may be imposed.
