25 April 2024

Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) through Weights and Measures Unit (SDT) and Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS) through Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Finance and Economy conducted Joint Operation on business premises at Brunei Muara District on Tuesday, 23 April 2024.

During the operation, SDT officers found twelve (12) units of weighing machines used for trading purposes. However, one (1) unit failed to comply with the Weights and Measures Act due to use of a weighing machine with an expired validity date.

SDT officers also found one (1) business premise selling weight scale machines to consumers without permit from SDT as an agent. All of the items are ordered to be taken down from the display. The business owner was given out Reminder Notice for further actions.

All five (5) business premises inspected by DEPS adhered to the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and its regulations, where controlled items such as cooking oil and formula milk are not sold above the set maximum price, and prices are displayed clearly and accurately. One (1) of the five (5) business premises inspected is a participant of Brunei Mega Sales 2024 and the premise is found to comply with the prescribed sales conditions.

Business owners are advised to ensure weighing and measuring machines used during trading activities must be registered with SDT and in accordance with the Weights and Measures Act 1983 Chapter 151 and Weighs and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994. Failure to comply with or contravene with any provision of the Act is an offense and is liable on conviction to a fine of BND1000.00 or imprisonment for a period of three (3) months or both.

Businesses are also advised to comply with the Price Control Act, Chapter 142 and its regulations by not selling controlled items above the set maximum price, displaying prices clearly and accurately as well as adhering to the prescribed sales conditions. Business compliance plays a role in increasing consumer confidence and stimulate economic activity in the country. 7. For any enquiries, public may contact the relevant agencies as follows: i.
