The Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE), through the Weights and Measures Unit (SDT), together with relevant Government agencies, recently conducted a joint enforcement inspection at Muara Fish Landing Complex.
This operation was carried out to enforce the Weights and Measures Act 1983 (Chapter 151), ensuring that all weighing and measuring instruments used for trade are valid, accurate and duly registered with the SDT Unit.
During the operation, a total of twelve (12) weighing and measuring instruments were found to be in use for trading purposes. Of these, eleven (11) units were found to be non-compliant with legal requirements, comprising three (3) units with expired registration and eight (8) units that were not registered. A Seizure Notice was issued, and all non-compliant instruments were confiscated. The owners are required to report to the SDT office within seven (7) working days from the date of issuance for corrective action and compliance. Instruments that have since undergone renewal of annual verification or new registration have been returned to the respective owners for trading use.
Traders and users of weighing and measuring instruments are reminded to comply with the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994, particularly under Section 3(2), which stipulates that any person using unstamped or uncertified instruments for trade commits an offence. Upon conviction, offenders may be subject to a fine not exceeding BND1,000.00, imprisonment for up to three (3) months, or both. In addition, such instruments may be forfeited, and any transaction conducted using such instruments shall be deemed invalid.
